Tesla Model 3

The 2023 Tesla Model 3 exhibits two recurring safety issues with its driver-assistance system. First, 'phantom braking' occurs while Autopilot or FSD is engaged, causing sudden unexpected deceleration with no obstacle present, creating a rear-end collision risk. Second, the Full Self Driving (Supervised) system failed to navigate an intersection properly, stopping mid-turn while an oncoming vehicle approached. The driver had to take manual control to avoid a hazard. A Tesla service technician witnessed the intersection failure, and the service summary confirmed FSD 'did not proceed through the intersection properly.' The vehicle was brought to a Tesla service center twice without the issue being resolved.

The powered trunk failed to detect an obstruction (a person's head) when closing. Instead of stopping or reversing direction upon contact, the trunk continued applying downward force. The obstruction detection system, which is designed to prevent injury by halting or reversing the trunk when an object or person is detected, did not function as intended, resulting in injury.
