SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260107-6B443-2147324771. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14APH8 - Type 82Y5 (Lenovo Legion Slim 5 laptop computer. Consumer-grade portable laptop with an integrated lithium-ion battery, internal cooling system, and aluminum chassis. The device is designed for general computing and professional use and includes an internal rechargeable battery permanently housed within the chassis.). Incident: I experienced repeated failures with a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 laptop over the course of ownership, including multiple repairs. In December 2024, I observed clear external deformation of the laptop chassis, including swelling and an inability for the device to sit flat on a level surface. The deformation was localized to the left side of the device and caused the laptop to rock and pivot when light pressure was applied, which is consistent with internal battery swelling. The device was not opened due to safety concerns related to potential lithium-ion battery expansion. Because of the suspected battery swelling and the associated fire and explosion risk, I determined that the device could not be safely transported on a commercial aircraft. The laptop was left with hotel management for safekeeping and appropriate handling. No physical injury occurred; however, the condition presented a potential safety hazard, including risk of fire, smoke, or battery rupture. Lenovo was notified, and documentation including photos and video of the deformation was provided.
