SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20181201-AA966-2147384032. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB Solid State Drive (Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB Solid State Drive). Incident: I ordered a Samsung 860 EVO Solid State Drive to replace an exiting hard drive in my PC. The drive was installed, using the existing SATA power and Serial ATA connector. Shortly after the PC was turned on, the drive caught on fire damaging the entire PC. Had I not been around when the fire happened, it could have burned my entire house down. This is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. My other issue is who pays for the damage to the PC? How do I even begin to estimate the loss of data and what impact tat will have? I would estimate the hardware damage to be at least $1600 - which is not nearly as big of a deal as the damage to the drives in the PC. The resulting loss of data is catastrophic to me. Years of recordings of music including at least 35 entire songs that were recorded and stored on that PC are now lost forever. The drive was intended to be used as a backup to the other drives, in case of data loss. now I am looking at total data loss. As a musician who has been recording for 30+ years the loss of my music is completely heart breaking. No amount of compensation could ever be determined that would be fair for this loss.
