Valve Steam Deck LCD

Steam Deck will not power on or show a charging LED. Owner tried button-reset sequences, battery disconnect/reconnect, and leaving it on the charger with no success, and planned an RMA after exhausting common Reddit fixes.

Original Steam Deck LCD 512GB stopped enumerating USB peripherals while still carrying HDMI and power. Port was not dirty and the unit was not dropped. BIOS USB mode resets, USB controller reset combos, and battery saver steps failed; dmesg showed USB enumeration failures suggesting hardware failure.

Steam Deck screen and buttons completely stopped working; Steam Repair Center diagnosed a shorted capacitor attributed to electrical or thermal stress and asked the owner to pay. Owner used only the original charger, denied high temperatures or demanding games, never opened or modified the unit, and notes repair staff admitted they cannot determine exact cause or show misuse evidence.

Out-of-warranty Steam Deck 512GB (LCD/version 1) repeatedly lost the built-in controller so the system reported no controller detected and only the touchscreen worked. Right before freezes, the right trackpad vibrated uncontrollably or ground; disabling haptics and fan-control tweaks only helped temporarily. Owner suspected the haptic motor was shorting and forcing a protective controller shutdown.

Launch Steam Deck had power-button failure repaired under warranty, then the issue returned and became fully non-responsive just out of warranty. Deck still charged normally. Contact cleaner did nothing; Valve repair quotes ranged $100–300, which the owner could not commit to at the high end.

Launch-edition 256GB Steam Deck became sluggish and failed updates after sitting unused. Kernel logs showed critical NVMe medium errors and unrecovered read errors despite SMART reporting low power-on hours (~136) and low percentage used, pointing to premature storage failure.
