Government / agencyIndexed Oct 22, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20251121-92524-2147326185. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Commercial Electric Commercial Electric 4 ft. 88-Watt Equivalent Integ. Incident: I purchased a "spin light" manufactured by Commercial Electronics at Home Depot about 6 months or so ago. It has been awaiting installation since then (bought for an interior stair well... not a huge priority) and its been sitting on a table on our covered back porch awaiting its turn on the honey-do list. The box was never opened. Last night, I walked out to our porch after dinner and the box was smoking. It subsequently, and quickly, caught fire. I grabbed a spatula from the table and threw the now flaming light into the yard. My wife responded to some words I'd rather not repeat, and we watched in amazement as the thing burned ... we were honestly kinda stunned at what we were seeing. I threw it in a bucket of water after taking some "you gotta be kidding me" pics. Very thankful that we caught it (it was sitting on a wooden table (scorched, but still serviceable)... quite literally at bed time... and where it was, had it not been caught it would have burned our log home to the ground... table to railing, railing to deck... gone.) We were lucky... our concern is for others who have these things.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20240123-E5C14-2147342533. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Commercial Electric Commercial Electric 4 ft. 88-Watt Equivalent Integ (4 foot LED shop light). Incident: I purchased a 4 foot Commercial Electric LED shop light from Home Depot and it caught on fire in our basement. My wife plugged a clothes iron into the plug at the end of the light and a few moments later the light was in flames. Thankfully she was able to put out the fire and no damage occurred. There is no warning label on the light fixture, or in the manual or on the packaging materials stating that you shouldn't use that plug for other items. After some research, there are several reviews on Home Depot's website back to 2021 of these shop lights catching on fire. I contacted Feit Electric about the issue per their response to my review on Home Depot's website, who I assume produce the product and is relabeled as a Commercial Electric product, they seem to be aware of the issue and also are completely unconcerned about their lights catching fire.
