SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260708-73906-2147314272. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: iRobot-counterfeit 48Wh Upgraded OEM Battery (iRobot Roomba 981 lithium ion battery.). Incident: Hello, I recently purchased an iRobot battery on eBay that claimed to be a legitimate OEM product, shipped and sold from the United States (CA). Approximately 14 hours after I installed the battery, it exploded and caused significant damage to my home. I was home, so immediate response was possible and my family was able to get the battery and vacuum out of the house. My brother happens to be a senior battery engineer for [REDACTED] and he purchase an identical battery from the same seller and evaluated it. The battery internals were used and thermal protection was absent. The selling company is of Chinese origin but they have stock in California from which they ship. I still have the vacuum and insurance is currently helping me repair the damage to my home. I have taken no action with eBay or started any litigation. I just wanted to let your organization know so you can take any measures that are appropriate. This company is still selling this product on eBay. This concerns me as the product failed he same day it was installed in my hardware. Had I not been home at the time, I would have most likely lost my home and possibly my pets. I have a video of the incident.
