SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260803-6A91F-2147312986. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: OCOOPA Model 118 (Rechargeable Hand Warmer). Incident: Approximately one year ago (around mid-2025), we noticed a burning smell in our living room. Tracing it, we found smoke coming from a closet. Inside, several items of clothing were smoking and smoldering, with visible signs of flame. The source was an OCOOPA rechargeable hand warmer (Model 118 / ZLS-118S, purchased on Amazon in December 2021, order [REDACTED]), which had spontaneously ignited while stored in a jacket pocket inside the closed closet. We believe the enclosed space limited available oxygen and prevented open flames from fully igniting the closet contents, had the unit been in an open area or had the fire gone unnoticed longer, the outcome could have been far worse. No one was actively using the product. It was not in use at the time, it was stored in a jacket pocket in a closed closet when it ignited on its own. No injuries occurred, as the fire was discovered while still smoldering. However, the potential for serious injury or death was real, the fire started unattended inside a home, and only the early detection of the burning smell prevented it from spreading. 4 jackets sustained direct fire damage and were destroyed. The remaining contents of the closet sustained smoke damage. The hand warmer itself was destroyed and disposed of.
