Government / agencyIndexed Oct 16, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210521-013E3-2147363998. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Prepworks Nut Chopper GFNC-2 (An 8" tall, clear plastic nut chopper with a 3" removable red plastic oval top, a 4" non-removable red plastic base and a 1" red plastic band in the center that is also the location for the top and the bottom to screw together; and too, the location of the metal hand-crank with a red plastic knob-type handle.). Incident: In January, 2021, I ordered the above nut chopper from Walmart. When the package arrived, I was incredibly disappointed to see that on the lip of the jar in two places, the plastic was broken leaving two jagged edges of plastic where the jar screws into the chopper portion. There were no plastic pieces in the packaging, so it obviously didnt happen during the mailing process...but rather, in the initial manufacturing and packaging process. That fact made me even more disappointed because that meant that a broken item was selected and sent to me from the vendor. I was then in contact with the vendor and they sent me another nut chopper with no apparent flaws. I was happily using it daily to chop almonds for my oatmeal and yogurt breakfast. Several days ago while eating my usual breakfast of oatmeal, yogurt and chopped almonds, I bit down on something very sharp, jagged and hard. Much to my shock, it was a piece of plastic over long and about 1/8 wide. After an immediate investigation, it turned out to be a piece of the edge of the brand new nut chopper. I could have swallowed that thing and done severe damage to my intestines, even unto death. Since this seems to be a pattern regarding the safety of the plastic rim, there appears to be an engineering flaw in the design of this item. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PIECE OF KITCHEN EQUIPMENT WHICH SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM SHELVES AND FROM THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL OF THIS PARTICULAR NUT CHOPPER.
