SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20181202-3DCE5-2147384016. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: General Electric GE JCBP40DP1WW (General Electric 30 " electric coil top range with convection oven white in color). Incident: While cooking supper, a pot (stainless steel) containing water and potatoes placed on the front element of our GE electric range (coil top) was ruined from the element exploding. The element was blown apart which caused a very large white and blue flash with a horrifying bang. Small metal fragments were sprayed around and also melted to the pot and drip pan under the element. This is now the second time this has occurred! ( within six mouths of purchase and now 8 years later) We contacted the dealer the first time this occurred ( Sears Canada) as the stove was under warranty, and a service person attended and claimed this to be a normal occurrence. He then replaced not only the element, but also the block terminal and a sensor. This doesn't sound like a normal occurrence to me! My concerns are for the clear potential of injury from flying metal and also the potential of electrical shock if a hand was in contact with the pot when this occurs. The flash from the explosion could be compared to the arc flash of a welder which is blinding as well. This has been reported before by other consumers as well!
