SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200601-25A22-1985199. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kenmore Elite 29272001 (Kenmore Elite Top load washing machine Model 29272001). Incident: The washing machine exploded while it was in use and it had been on for approximately 20 - 30 minutes. The top flew completely off of the washer. Several sides of the washer were dented and several pieces were broken and landed on the floor. The damage was limited to the washer itself. The washer also moved out of place as a result of this incident. The consumer never had any problems with the washer prior to this incident. The consumer was washing a king size, (terry cloth) mattress cover (with a very thin plastic backing) that is used on a [REDACTED] mattresses and 3 T-shirts and 1 pillow case. This mattress cover was designed specifically for this type of mattress. The consumer's husband moved the washer to the outside, back portion of their home. Product was removed on June 9, 2020 by a Maytag delivery person. Numbers called: 800-469-4663, 800-638-2772, 800-488-1222. Was unable to speak with a representative after several calls. Placed on hold for over 45 min. & disconnected.
