SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20181023-1FB24-2147384851. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kenmore 790.92203014 (slide-in type kitchen range - flat surface). Incident: My Kenmore (model: 790.92203014, s/n: VF21056996) slide-in type kitchen range caught on fire for no apparent reason. The range broiler was being used to toast a piece of bread when the main control area (clock, temperature indicator, etc.) of the range burst into flames. Neither the broiler area nor the cooking surface were affected. The fire only lasted for a few seconds and no one was injured. The wall behind the range suffered soot damage (photo available) and, if the wall behind the range had not been covered with brick, it would have likely ignited. The circuit breaker for the range tripped and the 3 flames died before we could get to our fire extinguisher. Looking into the range control area from the rear, the printed circuit board (upper right-hand area) shows signs of soot, melted wiring, and melted components (photo available). No other area of the range appears to have been affected. This range is approximately 5 years old. Fearing that a real fire hazard exists in this appliance, this range will be disposed of on 10/26/2018 and we will not be repairing it/returning it to service.
