Government / agencyIndexed Oct 16, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210409-7A360-2147364886. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: KitchenAid KMHC319ESS (30" 1000-Watt Microwave Hood Combination with Convection Cooking). Incident: In January my Wife and I purchased a brand new Over-the-hood Microwave from Spencers TV and Appliances. This was to replace a 26yr old [REDACTED] that was not matching the current appliance scheme. The [REDACTED] never, ever had any problems and worked until the day that I deinstalled it. The new Kitchen Aid unit has all the newest features including a step by step cooking system. My daughters have been in remote learning and I wanted a unit that would have step by step auto cooking features for them at lunch breaks. On Tuesday March 30th my daughter put water and rice into a microwave bowl following the step by step instructions. The unit has an automated sensor system that stops cooking when it is done. Both my daughters had cooked rice in this many times with no issues. In this instance the Microwave did not stop cooking, my Wife working from home smelled smoke and went in to the kitchen to find out what happened. My daughter [REDACTED] said it did not stop cooking and burned down the rice into a crisp and even melted the plastic inside the microwave. This type of melted plastic has fully contaminated the unit and can not be removed without taking the unit fully apart. The unit is still under the 1 year warranty so I contacted Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool) about the incident. The technician from Guinco just left. He made a full report to the Whirlpool safety department. When I called them they said there was nothing further they could do since I would not accept anything but a replacement. They said there only responsibility is to repair it. It doesnt matter that everything b
