SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200607-CE104-2147371858. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Rome Rome's #1605 Pie Iron ("Rome Original Pie Iron"). Incident: "Rome" Brand Pie Iron.Manufacturer Code: "Rome's #1605 Pie Iron Double Cast iron" SKU # 29794-16059 Usage: Pie Iron has two sections which fold over each other to hold a sandwich while the entire utensil is placed over a camp fire. The cast iron sections had supported by two 24" metal handles. The handles are supposed to be attached by roller pins press-fitted through holes in the cast iron to secure than handles. The handles must support the iron as it is lifted out of the campfire, since the iron is red-hot from the camp fire. One set of handles was unsecured, the roller pins were not installed during manufacture. The other handle set was secured by roller pins but those pins were of a size which did not permit a solid press fit to secure the handle. While lifting the iron from the campfire, one handle immediately detached out of the capture hole and the heavy iron rotated around the other handle. This caused the iron to open and one side of the red-hot iron dropped onto the ground, very close to the foot of the person cooking over the fire. This is a very dangerous manufacturing defect; post-manufacture quality control should have caught this deficiency.
