SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20250412-4C1AD-2147331975. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Samsung RF23M8570SR (Samsung Smart Hub counter depth refrigerator). Incident: Before this incident began, it had been 10 minutes since anyone had touched the refrigerator. I heard the refrigerator started dispensing ice making noise and thought it was ice dropping. I left the kitchen and went to my office for about 20-30 minutes. When I came back to the kitchen it smelled like something was burning and discovered that the ice maker was dispensing ice on its own. When I opened the refrigerator and removed the ice maker, there was smoke in the ice maker area. I tried to turn off the ice maker, tried to reset two times and finally we had to unplug the refrigerator because it would not trying to dispense ice. This was a Friday night and Samsung technician came to our house Monday and said the refrigerator was not repairable. He also took photos - which I have - where you see components were melting. Had I not been home, this would have started a fire. This incident comes after Samsung has fixed my ice maker 5 times since we purchased it 4 1/2 years ago. We still have the refrigerator but it cant be used. This happened on 4/4 and as of today 4/12, Samsung still has not resolved this issue and I still dont have a refrigerator.
