Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20111020-DE1AF-2147474129. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 665.13543N412. Source model text: 665 17382300 / Stock 17382 Type 577-O. Incident: My dishwasher caught on fire. I had started my dishwasher and had gone to bed. After about 15 minutes or so I heard a strange noise and got up and went into the kitchen. There was black smoke billowing out of the top vents on my dishwasher and it had a very distinctive burning smell. I immediately opened the dishwasher door believing this would shut off the dishwasher. I was drenched with hot water as the water did not shut off and the dishwasher continued to run and fling water throughout my kitchen. So I closed the door and the smoke continued to flow. My husband went to the garage and turned off the circuit breaker and only then after a few minutes did the smoke dissipate.
