Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20111221-37736-2147472163. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: ACER ASPIRE Acer 6930 Series Model ZK2 (LAPTOP 17" ACER ASPIRE 6930-6067 SN: LXASR0X1069030007C2500 SNID: 90300012425 MFG DATE:0901). Incident: I have an Acer Aspire 6930-6067 laptop. The other day the sound went out on it, and a day later the screen was black. My [REDACTED] was plugged into the USB port and it smelt hot, so I removed the [REDACTED] and USB cable and let the laptop sit for a couple days. I turned the laptop on last night, smoke started coming out from underneath it, I immediately grabbed it, and turned it over just as the smoke turned into little flames. I blew the fire out and called ACER. They said my product was out of warranty and to call another phone number where I could pay for support. I am not going to pay for support because their product caught fire so I went to their website and began a chat. The rep told me to contact Revonate at [REDACTED]. But they were already closed for the night. When I finally was able to speak with a live person at the number they said there was nothing they could do because my computer was no longer under warranty. I responded "but this is a safety issue. My laptop caught fire by nothing I did. This product needs to be recalled." The lady on the other end asked her manager if there was something that could be done and she said no. She continued to reassure me that it was out of warranty and there was nothing more that could be done also they havne't had issues with other computers catching fire. The fact that this laptop caught on fire is of big concern. Had I not been sitting by it my house could have easily been up in flames. And the fact that the company thinks this isn't a big deal is concerning.
