Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20120418-7CDD8-2147468305. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton Beach 47665Z (Hamilton Beach Brew Station). Incident: My name is [REDACTED] and I'm reporting this on behalf of my mother in law (her address is listed in this report), [REDACTED]. According to [REDACTED] the following is a summary of what happened at her home on April 4, 2012: About 2:45pm, my daughter [REDACTED] and I were home. She was sitting at the kitchen table and I was in the family room. All of a sudden all three of the smoke detectors in our home went off. As I jumped up to see what was making the detectors go off, my daughter turned to the kitchen and at the same time, we both saw flames coming out of the back of the Brew Station. My daughter instinctively yelled fire and I ran to the kitchen to help put the flames out. I unplugged it quickly (it was plugged in but was not in use/not turned on at the time) we struggled to get the flames out because they were coming out of the back of the unit, near the top rather than the bottom where the cord is at. We managed to get the Brew Station into the sink so we could douse more water on it to extinguish the flames entirely. It took a minute to get the flames out but we did. We took the Brew Station out to the garage in an attempt to remove the smoke and charred smell. The smell lingered in the house for some time afterward. As can be seen by the pictures of the unit, the fire clearly came from within the unit and near the top of the backside of the unit. Had we not been home, our kitchen and house would have clearly caught on fire. The unit is clearly ruined and has extensive damage - far more than ever imagined. I certainly hope this has not ever happened to anyone else a
