Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20120813-28902-2147464808. Matched catalog product: Cuisinart CCO-50BKN Deluxe Electric Can Opener. Source model text: TOB-165. Incident: I have a broiler/convection/toaster oven from Cuisinart that sits on a counter top. The style number is TOB-195. It is an expensive all stainless steel unit. It is seemingly a nice oven, but there is a defect in the design that can prove to be EXTREMELY dangerous, especially to CHILDREN. The elements of the oven are at the top of the unit and very close to the exterior steel casing. There does not seem to be any insulation between the steel and the elements, and if there is - it does not work as it is insufficient. As a result the outside of the unit gets extremely hot when in use to the point that it cannot even be touched without actually causing a burn to the skin. It can actually cause second and third order burns to the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. That is how hot it gets. Other toaster broilers I have had and still have may get warm but not so hot you cannot even touch the unit. The Cuisinart is of poor design and poses a very serious risk to children in the home, and adults who may inadvertently touch the outside while in use, which is an easy thing to do. It also poses a fire risk, and will melt any plastics that you may place on top while in use. My wife and I have both burned our hands on the unit. We stopped using it, as we did not want our small and teenage children to burn themselves.
