Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20120927-E953F-2147463362. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Matched catalog product: Sony Vaio VPCF115FM. Source model text: VPCF115FM. Incident: I have a sony vaio laptop computer model VPCF115FM. Sony issued a recall on this computer due to a potential burn hazard. Sony states that by downloading a BIOS update, it will fix the problem. My computer will not accept the BIOS update as it says that my BIOS is up to date. My computer has over heated and shut down over 10 times. the computer gets so hot that you cannot touch the left hand side of the keyboard and you cannot put it on your lap as it will burn you. I have called sony and was told that i needed to send my computer to them, however, since my warranty is expired it will cost me 200-300 dollars to fix the computer. I want to fix the computer as this would be cheaper than buying a brand new one, however, I dont understand why I have to pay to have a recalled item fixed. If they know there is a problem with this series of computers and their fix did not fix my item, I would think they should be responsible for the computer. Anytime in the past that i have dealt with a recall, you take the product to the manufactured and they fix the problem free of charge, warranty or not. I will be happy to pay shipping to ship the computer back to sony but i just dont understand why i have to pay several hundreds of dollars to have it fixed when it was recalled by them in the first place and their supposed BIOS fix did not fix this model.
