Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20121104-F4FF6-2147462235. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Mr. Coffee 14-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker BVMC-PC14BL2. Source model text: ISX43-1. Incident: we had brewed 12 cups of coffee. The coffee machine had been on for about 1 1/2 hrs keeping the coffee warm. I had come back to the kitchen to get another cup of coffee when I heard the machine making noise like it was going through a brew cycle. I listed and found that it wasnot brewing but instead the bottom carafe heating element was boiling the coffee. Almost immediately I smelled like something was burning . Smoke started to come out from the carafe heating element . Smoke was visually coming from out from under the machine . I unplugged the coffee maker, took it outside the house on my porch and waited for it to cool and the smoking / bunring smell to stop.
