Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20121106-E8488-2147462174. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 665.13543N412. Source model text: 665.95822002. Incident: Error lights came on. Oven broiler element red hot when oven was on "bake". We turned off oven (nothing else was on). We were in the kitchen for 15 minutes more and there was no further indication of a problem. About an hour later, our smoke detectors went off. We saw/smelled no smoke but when we checked the kitchen, stove was too hot to touch. Stove lights indicating hot burners were on, but stove and oven were off according to the control panel. We immediately flipped off circuit breaker. When stove cooled down, we looked closer. The oven had ash inside as though it had gone through cleaning cycle. The oven/broiler element(s) must have come on by themselves. Had we been away, we could have had a fire. Very scary!
