Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20121119-2F79C-2147461788. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Frigidaire Electric Range Model FFEF3054TS. Incident: I had an item baking in the oven at 350 degrees and an item simmering on the stove top set at a 1.4 heat level. Both items were under 5 minutes from being finished cooking. I stood in another room and then could hear what sounded like popping and hissing coming from the kitchen. Within seconds I was back in the kitchen and saw sparks flying from the electrical panel. I tried to read what the panel said, as far as temperature and time, but it was completely blank and then the lights began flashing half zero's and suddenly flames burst up from behind the panel. The flames started burning upward on the wall, behind the range, up to my microwave placed above it. I then left the room as it filled with smoke very fast and called 911. Within minutes the fire department and EMS were at my location, geared up, went into the house, and discovered that an electrical fire had started from the back side of the electrical panel of the range. They stopped the fire, unplugged the range, and removed it from my house. What was left after that was a strong odor of burnt wiring and fire/smoke damage to my wall. The firefighters used a heat seeker to determine that the fire had not burnt upwards on the inside of the wall or attic space. They checked adjacent and surrounding walls, as well as the microwave, and concluded that the house was safe from any more flames or damage.
