Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130226-92270-2147458433. Matched catalog product: Kenmore Kenmore Elite Dual Fuel Model 790.xxxx. Source model text: Sears Kenmore Elite Model # 665.17464300. Incident: Our 8.5 year old dishwasher (Kenmore Elite Model 665.17464300) suddenly started making an unusual ticking noise while it was running, and in the 10 seconds it took to go to the kitchen to look at it, smoke and flames started coming out of the control panel at the top right side of the door. We splashed some water on it to douse the flames, then got the door open in order to turn it off, then we turned the circuit off to totally cut power to it. The noxious fumes of melting plastics and electronics filled the house for several days. After it cooled down, we opened the control panel off the door, and took some photos. There was a lot of blackened parts, and a wire harness completely burned through. Luckily we were close by, so the countertop didn't catch fire. (We would often set the timer to run while we're not home.)
