Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130313-A303A-2147457898. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Acer Aspire 8951G (Acer Aspire 8951G-9600 Laptop Computer P/N LXRJ207008). Incident: My Acer Aspire 8951G laptop computer has a removable battery-powered trackpad that can be used wirelessly away from the rest of the computer. On the night of 2/27, the laptop was ON in sleep mode with the LCD screen off. I heard a loud POP, and came downstairs to investigate. When I looked at my laptop computer, I saw the laptop's trackpad no longer sat flush and level with the body of the laptop. The battery cell inside the laptop trackpad had exploded and bulged outward due to heat. The entire plastic body of the removable trackpad no longer can stay closed due to the bulge in the center. The trackpad is no longer useable due to the fact it cannot sit flush and interface with the pins on the laptop side -- not to mention the hazard of future trying to charge a damaged battery. On 2/28, Acer assigned me a RMA number of [REDACTED] and issued me a FedEx ground tracking label to return the laptop. I elected to return only the wireless trackpad with the exploded battery due to sensitive personal data still on the laptop. Days later, Acer claims they still are not able to find the defective module returned to them and refuses to help further, other to demand that I send the rest of the laptop to them without guarantee of return, repair, or compensation!
