Incident: We purchased a new 21-hp Craftsman riding lawn tractor from sears. THe first time I started the engine and put it into gear, there was a terrible grating sound coming from the rear axle. After driving the tractor 25 feet and parking it in my garage I turned off the engine and lifted up the seat to see if I could spot an obvious problem. I found that the box which holds the battery in place had broken. the box, and the battery were now resting on top of a pully/fan above the rear axle.
