Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130503-20326-2147456441. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Dell 5100 CN (Dell 5100 CN Color Laser Printer). Incident: Numerous years ago I bought a Dell 5100 CN color laser printer which I still use. Recently [REDACTED] done some software updates and the printer reported a PCL error when I tried to print a page. As I had to go out to the doctors today I ignored it and though I would look at it later when I got back, and print the documents I was working on, on top of the printer. A few minutes ago, which is about 12 hours later, I smelt something like smoke / burn and picked my documents up off the printer and they were very hot. The printer was also very very hot on the case, and even hotter inside to the point that it was to hot to touch. I do not know what caused the issues, but something is causing the printer to want to print, but fail before the printer finishes that job. I strongly believe that if I were not here, or noticed the slight smell as I am allergic / have sensitivity to what seems like everything, then the printer would have continued to heat up until the printer set on fire, which I am pretty sure would have then continued on to set my house on fire. Note that I have used this printer for 8 years without any issues. IF I use the printer with [REDACTED] it works fine, the problem only occurs when using [REDACTED] with the PCL Error. After about 20 minutes of waiting after the issue above, I tried printing from [REDACTED] which it did perfectly fine, but once again when I tried with [REDACTED] the same PCL error came up, so I shut the printer physically off this time. Also, this printer even though old is still very common as it is fast, generally reliable and inexpensive t
