Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130529-892F6-2147455689. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Mr. Coffee 14-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker BVMC-PC14BL2. Incident: I purchased a Mr. Coffee espresso machine from Wal Mart on 5/27/13. I followed the instructions included with the appliance, including performing the 'test run' using just water. I brewed my first pot using espresso coffee and just before the end of the brew cycle, I turned away from the machine to get a coffee cup. Right after I turned, there was a huge exploding sound and the brew basket blew off the machine, the glass carafe shattered, and hot espresso went everywhere. There was broken glass, coffee grounds, and hot espresso all over me - my kitchen - and even in my dining room. The walls and ceiling in my kitchen were covered in grounds and espresso. If I had not turned away from the machine when I did, the flying glass and metal parts would have hit me in the face. NOT A SAFE APPLIANCE!
