Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130611-8FA1A-2147455312. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 665.13543N412. Source model text: 665.16039401. Incident: Sears Kenmore Dishwasher (model # 665.16039401, serial # FR5201579) caught on fire while running normal dish washing cycle. Fire originated in control panel; pressing cancel button would not stop unit from running; after opening door the unit continued to run spraying water on the ground; the entire time plastic on front of door behind controls was bubbling and blowing smoke. House was quickly filled with smoke from burnt plastic and components. After running to circuit breaker panel and turning off power, smoke and symptoms of fire subsided. Unit was purchased new from Sears retail store in Northeast Mall, North Richland Hills Texas, in 2005. Research on CPSC website and other online sources revealed numerous incidents of same symptoms for this model dishwasher; Sears refused to initiate recall of product despite numerous reports of fires.
