Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130703-2540F-2147454560. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Char Broil - TEC 463268 307 (Propane powered portable grill). Incident: RE: Char-Broil TEC grill Model 463268307 S/N G508010704002246 I have had this problem on this grill on two occasions. With a mild breeze coming in from the backside of the unit the controls on the front panel get hot enough to burn the fingers, hot enough to melt the knobs and trim and the electric igniter gets so hot that it has exploded. The explosion is the result of the battery inside overheating. The explosion cause the parts of the igniter to be shot directly into the face of the operator. I replaced these parts once but the problem reoccurred. I just spoke to the manufacturer and their response is to not use the grill in the presence of wind. This is an outdoor device and there is always the possibility of a breeze outdoors. I have another similar grill from another manufacturer that does not have this problem since it incorporates a simple heat shield between the burners and the controls.
