Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130820-0DE14-1349513. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton Beach 22570E (2-slot toaster). Incident: When toasting an [REDACTED] brand waffle in a Hamilton Beach toaster my wife and I began to smell something that we did not initially attribute to the toaster. When the smoke alarm went off, however, we determined that it was the waffle. The "wire bread guides" in the toaster open wider than the sheet metal toast slots above. When the waffle was "toasted," the bread guides attempted to lift it, but the waffle caught the edge of the upper sheet metal toast slot, preventing the waffle from lifting and preventing the toaster from shutting off. Had we not been attentive to the situation we could have had a fire caused by a burning waffle or anything in the area heated by the toaster and waffle. This is an unacceptably hazardous design. No injuries or property loss were sustained.
