Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20140521-631EF-2147444315. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Breville Compact Smart Oven BOV650XL (Compact Oven/ Breville Compact Smart Oven model BOV650XL). Incident: I purchased a Breville Compact Smart Oven model BOV650XL approximately 2 years ago at a local Bed Bath and Beyond. Recently the upper heating elements stopped working. I searched the internet and found reading Amazon reviews other owners reported their ovens also had heating element issues. Some people fixed the problem by ordering new elements and replacing them. Being a handy person I ordered new top elements. When they arrived I took my oven apart. I found a spade (for the top element) that should be soldered into the PCB was completely loose and it fell out. The area around the circuit board was burnt from excess heat. I documented it with photos which I have included. This is a manufacturing defect and quite possibly could have caused a fire in my home. I contacted Breville customer service USA in Torrance CA. I was admonished for opening up the oven and told the unit is out of warranty. They offered to give me 40% off the purchase of a new unit. I told them I wasn't interested in buying another Breville appliance.
