Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20140602-67AC3-2147444049. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Matched catalog product: Kawasaki Teryx. Incident: I am an owner of a 2012 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4X4 UTV off-road recreational vehicle. During an off-road outing on 5/31/14, the hardened steel shaft of my steering wheel broke clean in half after taking a 10 mph low speed impact on a trail ride. I was left holding the steering wheel in my hands on a hillside; fortunately, I was not driving at a fast rate of speed to lose control and roll my UTV. The steering shaft broke clean in half due to what I believe is a manufacturing defect. The break was so clean that it looks like it was cut using a skilled saw. I called the dealership where I purchased my Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4X4 vehicle, and they confirmed that this incident should not happen. I am currently working with my dealership to have the defect replaced by an authorized Kawasaki service shop.
