Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20141021-2EEFA-2147439874. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton Beach 31333 (Toaster Oven). Incident: I was using the toaster oven to reheat pizza. I set the timer dial to 10 minutes and after that time heard the bell go off signaling it was done. I was working on something else in the kitchen so I didn't get the pizza out right away. A few minutes later I smelled something burning & went to the toaster oven...The timer dial had gone past the 'off' point and continued all the way to the 'Stay On' position. Moving the dial back to the 'off' didn't turn the device off, the timer again travelled to the 'Stay On' position. Not having any other means to turn the device off, I unplugged it. This is a faulty design that could have caused a fire. This spring-loaded timer dial works by turning it clockwise from 'Off' to set a specific time and turning it counter-clockwise from 'Off' to have the oven be constantly on. Unfortunately, a faulty 'stop' at the Off position causes the unit to go to the 'stay on' position indefinitely. The failsafe 'stop' position on an oven like this should be OFF, not ON!
