Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20141129-0EF62-2147438399. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 665.13543N412. Source model text: 665-16032402. Incident: Kenmore Dishwasher 665-16032402 was running through a cleaning cycle, and members of the family were commenting that they detected a strange smell. It seemed like the smell was coming from the dishwasher, but was hard to know for sure. We paused the cycle to check inside the dishwasher but didn't notice anything that was wrong. After resuming the cycle, we continued to notice the smell. I'm not certain how long the dishwasher was running, but seemed longer than normal. Shortly after, I heard a pop sound and saw black smoke coming from the top right of the dishwasher door. I ran to the dishwasher to open the door and smoke continued to come out of the door. I told my son to watch the dishwasher while I ran downstairs to turn off the circuit breaker. After I turned off the breaker, I heard my son yelling fire from upstairs. I ran back upstairs, grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out the flames that were burning through the inside of the dishwasher door.
