Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20141229-163BA-2147437269. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton Beach P100N30AP-F4 (Hamilton Beach Microwave). Incident: Saturday, 27 December 2014, my Day Shift Sergeant called me to advise he had to call the fire department out to our police station because of a smoke / odor investigation. It was discovered that the newly purchased microwave had overheated without anyone using it. The FD used the thermal on the wiring & our electric dept came out & checked the outlet. It is working fine & showed no heat signature. The back of the microwave had brown scorching around the fan vent area & the thermal heat signature showed just above 150 degrees. Again, it was confirmed no one had been using the microwave for approx. 5 hours. The microwave was purchased on 10/17/2014. It is a Hamilton Beach model # P100N30AP-F4 with a serial # of: F40816E00680. While in a business setting, it is normally only used 3-5 times daily & not for very long. Monday, 29 December 2014, @ approx. 08:30 hrs, I contacted Hamilton Beach Customer Service (800-267-6419) to advise them of the problem. I spoke to operator [REDACTED] who advised he had not received any notification or complaints about this particular model of microwave & to just take it back to the store.
