Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20150116-2EBE3-2147436416. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton beach 33967 (Hamilton beach [slow cooker], "set and forget" 33967). Incident: I had a Hamilton Beach [slow cooker], the "set and forget" 33967. I had it for five years, and hadn't had any problems, until yesterday. It had been set on high, for four hours, to cook a broth. My husband was home at this time, and with in a 30 minute period, it went from "just fine" to explosion of broth all over the kitchen. First of all, the lid was not clamped down, so there was no reason for it to explode due to pressure. Second, I was cooking the broth in four hour increments, because I am cautious. According to my husband, it started beeping, didn't stop beeping, and when he came in to see why, it was frothing over with extreme heat. He managed to unplug it without burning himself. Now why, when this [slow cooker] started to malfunction, would it lock into an extreme heat, unlike anything we'd ever seen before? Why wouldn't it just shut off? The broth managed to hit items 2 feet away, which is quite unlike anything I've ever heard off. We've gotten a new [slow cooker]. I will never buy anything by Hamilton Beach again.
