Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20150514-7B961-1485334. Severity: Injury, Emergency Department Treatment Received. Product: Motorola MBP33BU (Video monitor for babies). Incident: On 5/1/15, a 10 month old baby was in his crib for a nap. A video baby camera which was fastened to the wall was turned on. The electrical cord for the camera was outside of the crib. The mother held the monitor while she went in her yard with her 5 year old child. The monitor began to beep and indicated "Lost Signal." This was the same beep sound that it makes when the battery is low or when the mother walks to the basement or mailbox. The monitor made this beeping noise for about 20 minutes. Since the mother also had a SIDS monitor which indicated that her infant was still breathing, she was not alarmed by the video monitors beeping sound. When she walked into the nursery she was surprised to see that the video monitor cord was wrapped around her childs arm, chest, and neck. The infant was taking very shallow breaths and had broken blood vessels on his face. Immediately the mother un-wrapped the cord and the infant caught his breath. The mother observed that her son had pulled the electrical cord out of the camera and through the rails on the crib. The baby was very lethargic. He was examined in an emergency room at which time an x-ray showed that his lungs were clear. He was diagnosed with facial petechiae from a near death experience.
