Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20151231-B20A2-2147425259. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Breville BTA630XL (This is a Breville Lift and Look Touch toaster White with two long slots for bread... considered a 4 slice toaster Only raised buttons to activate functions and to start heaters). Incident: Breville Lift and Look Touch Toaster purchased 12/11/2015. First used 12/26/2016. Design of toaster has buttons for operation on top of toaster towards the front. The buttons are approximately 1mm raised and only take very light pressure to activate which starts the toaster, lowers bread and turns on heaters inside. Due to the ease, location, and raised feature of the start button, it is very easy to inadvertently brush up against the button and turn it on. Even a child could do this. If a lightweight toaster cover, or anything else is on toaster at time, It will start a fire. This is exactly what happened. A toaster cover was placed over toaster and just the weight of the lightweight cover had activated the start button and a fire ensued. This would not have happened if the buttons were recessed, even by 1mm. There would have had to be direct pressure placed on it to activate the button. Very dangerous design..
