Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160111-42086-2147424826. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Product: Breville BOV800XL (1800w Countertop Oven). Incident: I purchased the Breville BOV800XL at Bed Bath and Beyond and the unit was operating normally for about 12 months. I told everyone that would listen how much I loved this product, citing that the price was absolutely worth it. One day the unit was working correctly, the next day it wasn't. The LCD screen still functions properly, as do all the knobs and buttons, but upon pressing the start button (which activates the burners) electric popping can be heard and sparks can be seen shooting out from an area under the LCD panel. I had my hand on the side of the unit and it shocked me pretty hard. I've actually never had an appliance do this, I certainly didn't expect it to happen from this device when it's a very high end purchase from a reputable company. (around $220). After looking into getting the unit serviced, I decided to call Breville to see if they'd take care of this issue since it is most certainly a design flaw, a VERY DANGEROUS design flaw. Breville's phone support suggested that I PLUG THE DEVICE BACK IN and try different settings to see if I could get the heating elements to heat up. This is very irresponsible and dangerous advice, I honestly fear that this unit could catch fire if I plug it back in. Breville, you should stand behind your product. I've read other stories online where this exact same issue is happening to other people with the Rev. A version of this oven.
