Incident: On February 14, 2016 Supco SCM150 Type2 SPD surge protection unit installed by Chas Roberts Co. onto subpanel of A/C unit malfunctioned and caught fire. Supco unit made several loud tapping noises then caught fire and melted. Fire Department responded & monitored to ensure fire not spreading to internal walls of home. Side of house (synthetic stucco) damaged by smoke from fire. FD stated cause was Supco unit. Electrician responded to evaluate damage, restore power, ensure safety of house, and document. Chas Roberts HVAC Co. called. Stated sending someone for fire inspection, but instead, regular technician responded. Technician removed faulty/burned Supco unit and tried to sell and install a different model unit. Technician stated they were aware of recall of Supco units by the company 4 months ago, but it was unofficialso Chas Roberts Co. not required to replace units they sold and installed.
