Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160827-C7E9B-2147414701. Matched catalog product: Apple Macbook Pro. Source model text: MacBook Pro 13". Incident: On July 16, 2016 I was working on my Apple MacBook Pro notebook computer at our vacation home, when I noticed, after a break, that the touch pad in the base of the computer was pushed up and out of the space it should occupy. At that same time I noticed an odor of overheated electronics, so I felt along the back of the computer and noticed a hot spot. After taking the back cover off, it was clear that the battery was the cause of the problem, since it was very hot, and it had expanded so much that it pushed the touch pad right up out of the computer. The immediate problem at that time was a label warning placed by Apple advising the user that they should not remove the battery. I contacted the nearest Apple store that I knew in Christiana, Delaware, but they indicated that they would not touch batteries at that store, even though they did other repairs.
