Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170327-EC197-2147404826. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Rheem Performance Platinum Electric Water Heater - XE80T12EC55U0. Source model text: PRO E40 M2 RH95. Incident: Brand New Rheem Water Heater drawing 9000 watts vs rated 4500 watts. Could have burned my house down. My circuit breaker got hot and tripped. I had a brand new out of the box Rheem electric water heater installed 03/23/2017. Only one heating element is supposed to be energized at a time, drawing 4500 watts. Both heating elements were energized on mine drawing 9000 watts or twice the rated current or load. The problem was a defective upper thermostat, which upon replacement was corrected. This Rheem water heater was very unsafe and NEVER SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE FACTORY in this condition. Rheem must not have tested my unit or otherwise have unsatisfactory quality controls
