Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170410-E1887-2147404515. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Rheem Performance Platinum Electric Water Heater - XE80T12EC55U0. Source model text: XE40M09EL45U1. Incident: We purchased our Rheem water heater in October 2015 from Home Depot and have not had a problem until yesterday when we had no hot water. Troubleshooting, my husband open the heater panel to push the reset button, but found that there were signs of a fire within the walls. The interior reset panel next to the button was completely melted. The water heater is located in our attic and we would not have known of the danger. The interior reset panel next to the button was completely melted. We see that another series of Rheem water heaters were recalled, but not ours. We planned to contact Rheem tomorrow, but felt the seriousness of the fire needed to be reported. We still have the original box if needed.
