Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170508-329A8-1660854. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Amana AGR303MFB (This was an Amana gas stove, which we bought roughly 7 years ago. It was an Amana 3Q-inch, 5.0 cu.ft, self-cleaning stove. #AGR303MFB There is also another number, which I'm not sure is a serial number: W10198635B). Incident: We bought an Amana gas stove about 7 years ago that had a self-cleaning feature. Last Saturday, April22, 2017, we put the stove on self-cleaning mode- we had done this before, but not very often. We later noticed that the self-cleaning appeared to be taking a long time; we began it at 1 in the afternoon, and it was still going at 5. I ran a quick errand at about 5, and was gone for about 45 minutes. When I returned, a wooden butcher block we kept on top of the stove to hold a set of knives had caught fire. The flames were 18 inches high, and the stove's digital control panel had melted. The stove's oven door was also locked shut. In addition, the smoke alarm in the house was sounding, and the entire first floor was full of smoke when my daughter and I entered the house. I put out the fire by grabbing the butcher block with a large towel, and tossing it out into the yard.
