Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170523-E3BA1-2147400299. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool wfe361lvb 1 (Whirlpool 30in freestanding smoothtop range. 30in. Black. Purchased in late 2011 or early 2012). Incident: I was making dinner last night on my whirlpool smoothtop electric stove. We bought it brand new in late 2011 or early 2012. I was smelling something burning and thought I had missed something on the cooktop. As I was making dinner I noticed the food was not getting very warm. I pulled out the bottom drawer and inspected the plug in. Everything looked ok. I then went downstairs to the basement and checked the breaker and everything was ok. I tried turning the stovetop off and on again and still nothing. My husband pulled out the stove to inspect the cord from the back side. We heard a loud pop and smoke started coming from the stove. We have a really tight kitchen so he needed to pull it out a little further to be able to see it. It sparked a second time and tripped the breaker. When we were able to look at it, the range cord had shorted out and caught fire.
