Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170710-78CB3-2147399103. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool WOD51EC0AS02 (Whirlpool double wall oven Model Number: WOD51EC0AS02). Incident: I have owned a Whirlpool double oven since February 2015. Model Number: WOD51EC0AS02 I followed all instructions provided in the manual for use and care. I ran the self cleaning option on the top oven for the first time and followed all instructions. The cleaning takes approximately 4 hours. About 2 hours into the cleaning, the inner glass of the oven shattered and glass went everywhere (floor, counter top, bottom oven). The self cleaning did not stop on its own. I stopped the cleaning and cleaned up all the glass. If I would have been standing near the oven, I would definitely been injured. If I had not heard the noise, the cleaning would have continued and possibly started a fire. I contacted Whirlpool and their response was that I needed to pay for the repair. Here is the comment from the representative: "Although our appliances are manufactured under strict quality guidelines, occasionally an appliance will not operate as expected, failures can occur, or components may deteriorate. We cannot explain what factors may have contributed to the premature malfunctioning or to the deterioration of the parts in your unit. We do value our customers and we provide a very robust warranty for our quality products but out side the warranty it is the consumers responsibility to provide for the maintenance and repairs of any appliance either by paying out of pocket or by maintaining a service plan on the appliances."
