Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20171027-40D9A-2147396400. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Hamilton Beach Griddle Model# 38518R, Power Adapter Model# ZL203. Source model text: 40880. Incident: In 2016 I purchased a Hamilton Beach electric kettle (model # 40880, series code A01S1CE). About 4 weeks ago I was heating about 2 cups of water and the kettle failed to shut off. Boiling water suddenly came gushing out of the spout in an arc, splashing over my kitchen counter. I immediately removed the kettle from its stand and unplugged it. Thinking that this was an anomaly I dried off the unit and waited before using it again. It continued to malfunction in the same way, so I reported the problem to Hamilton Beach. Their representative told me that no one else had reported this problem. My concern is that this product could cause serious burns from boiling water gushing out of the spout. Fortunately I was standing far enough away that I was not injured, but this product obviously has the potential to cause serious burns.
