Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180329-E8D5B-2147388926. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE DPSE810GG6WT (GE gas dryer.). Incident: I was running a load of towels in a ten-year-old GE gas dryer. It blew the circuit breaker and when I came back in from the garage after resetting it, I smelled something burning. When I opened the dryer door, black smoke poured out. I slammed it shut and ran for the fire extinguisher. When I returned and opened the door, there was a growing fire in the dryer drum. It took most of a good sized extinguisher to put the fire out. The vent duct and rear of the machine were clear of lint. The fire department suspects it was an electrical issue such as a short or overheated motor. We had a remediation team at our house for two days wiping, washing, scrubbing and shampooing every room on two floors. Thank goodness the fire was contained to the inside of the dryer. Can't say the same for the smoke that likely contained toxic particles from the burning plastic parts.
