Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180417-CA0E3-1752495. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool WCG97USODSOO (Whirlpool Cooktop (Model WCG97USODSOO, Serial# D73609768)). Incident: Here is my email to Whirlpool: Hi [REDACTED] We had a technician come out to take a look at the cooktop. As I suspected, there wasn't anything "broken" with the unit. I asked if there were any service reports. He checked and said there were not. As I had mentioned previously, we purchased a, builder installed, Whirlpool Cooktop (Model WCG97USODSOO, Serial # D73609768) with our new town home 3 months ago. The issue is that the gas can inadvertently be turned on (without the ignitor lighting it) just be cleaning/wiping the oven knob area. It has happened twice in 3 months since we've been here. Just for comparison, we had a gas cooktop at our previous home and we didn't encounter this issue in 20 years. The difference between the 2 cooktops is that our previous cooktop required just a little more downward force in order to turn the knob. Fortunately, both times someone smelled gas and turned it off before we had a real problem. The second time it occurred, I just happened to stay up late rather that going to bed with my wife. If I had gone to bed, the gas would have flowed until one of us smelled it or it exploded.
