Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180508-34BBA-2147388106. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Frigidaire CGEF308TNF2 (Frigidaire 30" Electric Range Stainless Steel Double Oven). Incident: We noticed a plastic burning smell about 9pm, looked every where and searched the entire house but did not find the source. Went to bed, woke up the next day, getting ready to go to work, when we got to the main floor we noticed the same smell had gotten much stronger, but again we were unable to find what was causing it. We went to work, and it was about 2 hours after we left the house that our smart smoke detectors went off notifying us on our phone that there was smoke in the main floor, we immediately called 911, and drove home. We entered the house with the fire fighters, there was a strong smell of burnt plastic, and smoke all over. After examining the house the fire fighters concluded that even though the range was not on, somehow the electric panel of it got some how short circuited and a small explosion occurred on the back of the panel, damaging the wall, but we were lucky that the fire did not spread to any where else and eventually died on its own, leaving the electrical panel all bubbled up from the heat. We were extremely lucky, but I was surprised that once I called Frigidaire to report this incident they did not care to send someone to investigate the actual fault of the appliance. The reason I'm reporting it here is to bring awareness and notify people of the potential hazard that they might have at their home, and not be aware of it. Not everyone would end up as lucky as we were.
